(BangkokPost.com) - About 1,000 people living close to Suvarnabhumi Airport who suffer from aircraft noise gathered Saturday at the airport, demanding that Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont provide urgent assistance.
The protesters, dressed in black, want the premier to help settle compensation on the properties they are to sell to the Airports of Thailand, which is the government's aiding measure to move the residents elsewhere.
The leader of the protesters Prachob Muang-in said that AoT moves very slowly in providing assistance in people living within the airport zone who are exposed to excessive noise levels.
Mr Prachob said the residents want Gen Surayud to tell AoT to purchase their properties within 15 days and that the estimated cost must not be below the market price.
The protestors also called on AoT to annul its decision regarding compensation made on May 9 as they charged that there was a mistake in the appraisal prices of 71 homes. They wanted AOT to apply a regulation it made on March 20 this year in appraising prices of the houses as they thought it was fairer to house owners.
More than 3,000 households have voiced their wishes to relocate elsewhere.
